John was an unmarried labourer when he signed up for the CEF at Edmonton on 4 January 1916.  He indicated that he had been 7 years in the Colours, 5 years reservist for the Cameron Highlanders; John had served in the Soudan in 1898 and in South Africa in 1901 and 1902.
