James is shown in the 1901 census of the parish of Lochs in Lewis, aged 9, the son of Duncan (40, gamekeeper) and Maggie J (30) and brother of Annie E (7), Sophie M (3), Mary C (2) and Alexander (1). James was born at Old Monkland, Lanarkshire. It is not entirely clear, but the family appear to be resident around Kinloch Shell.
