Ewen signed up for the Camerons at the Bayhead Post Office in January 1915, but served for only 7 months. He was discharged as physically unfit for service in September 1915. He had developed this in France in May 1915.

The death certificate for Ewen also shows that his sister Anne died the following day, 8 August 1916, at the age of 17. She had been suffering from pneumonia and typhoid fever.
